Exchange recipes beforehand—this challenges each person to expand his or her culinary skills. Each person then comes to the potluck with a dish they’ve never made before. The best part? Everyone ends up with a great new recipe idea and the experience to make it under his or her belt!

The right people
Aside from great food, the right mix of people can take a potluck to the next level. Host a kid-themed potluck in which each family has their children make a dish, or a singles or couples gathering to encourage mingling.
